For what it's worth, I remember when our club hosted a night-time poker run once in the socal desert.  I spent all day Saturday helping to lay out and "mark" the trail and checks.  We tried a new idea, of using those "glow sticks" to mark the trail and checks with.  The problem was that there was a good-sized moon out that night, so you couldn't see the glow sticks at all.  I rode the poker run (about a 50-60 miler), landed in a shallow mine shaft when trying to cross-country a section, got back to camp and found out nearly everyone was lost and had run out of gas.  So I turned around and went back out to help where I could and went out again, and again...I didn't get back into camp until 5:30 in the morning and everyone was safe and accounted for...
