when I back my bike up the chain is making this loud awful popping noise, it wasn't doing this before. Is it from having the chain too tight or what? Also my rear sprocket is starting to look like shark fins.any ideas?

Yes, they are worn out and need replacing. Your chain is so stretched out now that it is out of tolerance and it has caused excessive wear on your sprockets. Time for some new ones.

Make sure you Change both sprockets and chain at the same time.

When you back up, that pop you hear is your chain slipping off the worn-out back sprocket.  Your chain is probably also stretched, and your front at this point would be no better.  Gee, what to do?  Let's change our sprockets and chain before you end up ruining your transmission, which is a very good possibility if this keeps happening, or you're going to be stuck in the woods.

I mean this in the nicest way, but good grief, that shark-fin sprocket that you're talking about is a wornover sprocket waiting for your chain to let loose and do more damage.  Change sprockets and chain ASAP.  Just my opinion.  YZWoods

when my chain got stretched out on my old bike i would just cut off some links. But you should replace both sprockets and get a good O ring chain that will last a long time!

What everyone said is correct but what is actually making the sound is the teeth on sprocket being bent over a bit and they actually hold onto the chain instead of letting it just slip over the last tooth . When it creates to much tension on the chaina and the tooth cant hold onto the chain anymore then it "pops" off the tooth. You probably don't hear the noise when you push the bike forwards because the teeth are bent so they only catch when pushing the bike backwards.
If you buy cheap chains and sprockets expect to be changing them every 2-3 weeks . Like they said...buy a decent quality O-ring chain and decent quality sprockets and ride worry free and end up saving money in the end!

About 1/2 to 3/4 play up and down for the chain. Sprockets are worn when the teeth are pointy and/or lean over.
