When I try to go from neutral to 1st (or any other gear) the clutch is not engaging. I took off the oil cap and can see the plates being moved when I pull the clutch lever but when I put it in gear it lurches forward and dies. Fluid level of the clutch looks good and it looks to me like it should be working.

Help please...

Welcome 1255. Sounds like your clutch plates are sticking together. Take them out and have a look at them.

Is there moisture in the gear box fluid?  My sons 01 does the same thing and I found that the shaft seal for the water pump was leaking a little into the gear box and diluting the gear oil.  Have you changed the fluid?
