There isn't a bike between them...unfortunately.  I feel the same way.

I ride a 230 also (and is highly modified like the ones you've probably seen).  It's a GREAT bike and it has served its purpose well, but I do out ride it.  The power of the 250X is quite manageable, and I think you could handle it...it's just different than the 230...the weight though is a huge problem.  I've been looking at tons of different bikes to find the best one...

KTM's line of off road two strokes are probably your best solution..the 200XC or 200XC-W with electric start would probably be perfect...they have a lot more torque than regular two strokes, and shouldn't be too much maintenance.

Look into E-start kits...you might be able to find one for the XR....I know they make them for the XR650...

Good luck!

the XR250 and 250X are worlds different. The 250X has a lot more aggressive motor and suspention than the XR. On my dad's 04 250X, we had that for almost 2 years and never had to adjust the valves. The 250X is a good step up from the 230. It's much different than the 230, but as long as you'd have the 230 mastered, it should be ok.

I'm a little tall for the bike- I'm between 5'8 & 5'9.  The center of gravity is way too low for me.  We added a tall seat and bar risers & they made it quite a bit better.
I can ride a 250x but when I get in tight situations or in an enduro by myself, I just feel so much more comfortable with my old 230.  I can pick it up myself (no upper body strength), I can touch the ground comfortably & I don't have to worry about overheating or bending radiators.  I've been riding the 230 in the tight & hard stuff & the xr250 in the more open trails.  I just can't kickstart the xr without putting it on the stand or leaning it against a tree.
Just curious about the pegs though-we have a friend that is a machinist & I have considered having him lower them.

jaut be careful, your ower your feet which in turn is going to make your toes and feet more susceptible to injury. hit the weights and get that 250x haha...

It can be done I would bet.

I say just ride what you can ride. I im big for my height. I wanted a 125 2 stroke but i wasnt tall enouh so i had to go for the rm 100. Its not perfect but i get to ride. If you can ride a 250 than go for it. But i do understand were you are coming from

yeah, i'm about to drive my husband nuts  I guess I can get an X for open trail & keep the 230 for tight/off camber terrain.  It would just be so awesome to update the xr250- make it a bit lighter to accomodate the weight of the ES.

Buying a CRF250X and lowering the suspension a few inches should be perfect. You can also shave the seat foam down a little bit as well. As far as radiators, there are a few radiator cages out there that can make the radiators pretty sturdy.

Well I'm also 5'8"....I felt the same way as you....I wanted the lower 230 for tight stuff.  But eventually you get used to the big bikes...you'll start liking them much more once you get used to it....it's just a matter of getting used to the height difference...
