But i would say, get a helmet first!! boots 2nd, glove and back and chest protector next, and if you have any money left a neck brace would be good aswell

Oh and almost forgot, goggles to go with your helmet is also a good thing, keeps wind/dust etc out of your eyes!

At the very minimum you need the following:

Helmet
Goggles
Pants
Boots
MX Socks
Gloves

A chest protector and a jersey are nice to have but not an absolute necessity.
You can find cheap deals on the Ocelot brand. They usually have different levels of package deals to choose from. Check out these:

Check out the year end closeout deals from some of the mail order shops (or local dealers if they have them).  You can get left over 1-2 year old gear at quite a savings!

Pop, I just got my bell moto 8 helmet in and it is sweet.  If does have changeable pads and fits great.  It also has to be one of the prettiest helmets I've ever seen.  I may not be able to ride well yet but at least I will look good.

Well i would most definatly get boots next.  I was in a race were a guy snapped his ankle idk if he was wearin boots but i know they greatly reduce the chance there odd at first but u get used to them,  i dont ride with out them anymore.  Id suggest alpinestar tech 3's cause there cheap i think thor has a good boot for cheap.  I run gaerne sg-10 boots and i love them so comfortable,  i started with tech 3's.  Chest protector,  i wear a thor force chest protector and love it,  but there not for eveyone i spent 130 on mine just cuz it fits great i know some riders may not like to wear them.  As for gear,  Theres alot of good bundle packages like the other guys said.  I Run moose and thor gear and both are great.
