need advise

im looking at buying a used 4x4 pickup truck
and im new to the whole dealing with people that arnt that trustworthy
any tips would be appreciated

Check the front end, make sure there are no rips in the boots, no leaks, 4wd works good. Check tire wear for uneven wear, making sure there are not camber issues. Then just check the rest of it like its any other vehicle. If it's used, always offer 20 percent less then what their asking, if not more, its a buyers market.

getone that was not used on any off road quazy, get a stock truck adn do the add upgrades yourself. Used 4x4's have been abused and can have many problems with u joints, drive shafts, shocks, differentials, etc... if you need help, I owned a couple old scouts back in teh day and did a lot of 4 wheeling.

Right, but if your buying slightly used, sometimes people buy and mod trucks and they dont even see dirt sometimes. Buying a truck with mods can sometimes be very smart, since lifts are not cheap, and when you buy used, you pretty much get those mods for free, since you cant make anything off them when you sell it. I ve owned quite a few trucks in my life, and one of my best ones was modded when I bought it, saved a lot of money.

I wouldnt buy a used Ford truck. I am a Toyota guy myself. But it looks clean for a Ford anyway.

The last 4x4 I purchased looked good until I went to have it aligned and found the frame was cracked on both sides.

Frame damage is never fun. I got my 94 toyota pickup 4wd for 1800.00, runs like a dream. The deals are out there. Maybe venture out of town for your purchase?

Although timmy is right in a few ways, I was big into 4 wheeling growing up in teh rocky mountains and one thing I learned is that a stock truck is the way to go and adding your mods will benefit you in teh long run. Dags example is great''.

Well just because dag said he had frame damage, has nothing to do with a modded truck. That can happen to any vehicle, mods or not. Dont be proud. you can get a truck with 10k invested for 20k right now for the same price as the same model with no mods, take advantage of this market when you are buying used.

i dont want to go look at trucks that are over an hour drive away because if its a piecer then i just wasted allot of time and money  driving that distance

Fair enough. If you are unsure about the vehicle you are interested in, take it to be inspected. it costs like 30 bucks for a basic inspection that can save you thousands in repairs. Obviously do it when you are very close to buyin it, so you dont waste a bunch of money having it looked at by mechanics. That's the best way to get piece of mind in your situation.
