I like to know what is the differance between a 1996 and a 2004 EXC 300 piston. I can get a 2004 Piston kit, but the supplier cannot tell me if it is the same as a 1996 Piston kit. Both are 72mm bore and 72mm stroke. Can somebody help.

Hi cvbik, I'm sorry I can't give you an absolute answer, but I assume they are compatible.  If you can not locate the 1996 kit, the most you can lose out is the cost of the 2004 kit.  Even then you can probably sell it if it does not work out.  My brother has a 1997 300, and I own a 2005 300, and from all appearances and performance I'd say the engine hasn't changed in those years.  By the way, if the 2004 kit will work on my 2005, I will buy it off you if it won't work for your bike.     pm me if you are interested...-Paul
