Hey id like to get into motocross next spring. i like the sport and have always wanted to try to get into it. i was wondering what would be a good bike for me? id be riding mostly trails and racing at tracks that i can find around southeast iowa. im 19 years old, 6'5", and weigh about 280. i have some experience with motorcycles not very many dirtbikes though. i had a 73 suzuki 185 for a little while but sold it for a ninja 750. i have a 2001 yamaha r-1 that im trying to get rid of because im starting to get a little to crazy on. ive also riden a trials bike once or twice(2007 sherco 250). i also have some questions about what to expect when i start racing. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

well I cant help you with what to exepct when you start racing. But on he bike I might be able to help. So do you have a preferance on 2 or 4 stroke. I wuld probally go for a 250 2 stroke or a 450 4 stroke. Becuase (not calling you at fat by any means) are a big guy. And I think those would probally be your best choice.

250 2st or 450 4st. Expect to be pumped win lose or crash. there is nothing like it. get there early walk the track relax and ask questions from the organisers so you know when to be where.

i was leaning more towards a 2 stroke just for the simple fact its easier to maintain. no offense taken. the suspension? ive had a couple guys around here that raced tell me i need to have it revalved and install stiffer springs. is that hard to do or could i do that my self? i work at a local chevy dealer as an auto tech so i have a fair amount of mechanical skill. also how much more often do you need to maintain a 4-stroke?

You could do the forks. Precision Concepts told me that the stock 250 springs are actually to light for me when I am at 180. If you are a mechanic I don't see where a 4stroke would be that much more effort to maintain. the cost comes when something goes wrong. I think you would be more competitive on a 4. But I still love the 2.

I see what your sayin about the 4-stroke. would it be better to start with a 450 or 250 if its 4 stroke? I was just lookin at cost of parts cus im on a budget.

well it all depends on what class and if the bike is used or not. but 2 strokes are a good bike to race with. they are easier to repair and other stuff. but what to expect when your first race comes..frightened as hell lol. i was shaking my first time but i had a lot of fun. gl man!!

well if you dont plan to race alot then i would mabye go with a wr. but racing bikes are good for trails to as long as you loosen the suspension. btw..a 250 2 stroke or 4 stroke?

Welcome Ryan. What ever you get it would be good to ride alot and get use to your bike before you race, that way you will have more fun and it will be alot safer when you do race.JMO

Either 250 2 or 4 it doesnt really matter to me it would be most used for racing though. Thanks for the welcome. I had planned on it. A very good friend of mine used to race b class in high school (so not that long ago) and he said he would help me practice and get comfortable with the bike. He doesn't have the time to race anymore cus he has a kid
