That fork problem could be serious, so get that to a professional. All of the oil may have leaked out, or some part of the fork is bent or damaged in some way. You don't want to risk riding it that way.

true, although most of my family could be considered professional. one of my uncles is an ex crew chief for nascar. and another uncle used to build race bikes for hooters, i even watched him completely rebuild a dirtbike in one afternoon!!

Yeah it's always a safe bet with a used bike to change all fluids, you never know how old,low or even empty something may be. I would definitley pick up a clymer manual for your bike, there is so much maintenance info in those, I'd be lost without mine. Those 98's were wicked though.

no kidding, it's got a vicious power band, my uncle actually drove it uphill through trees!!now, for the clymer, is that the name of the manual, and kind i find it at just about any bike store?

Clymer is the brand name, but they make manuals for about any year of bike you can think of. Good bike shops should have some around, if not they are in any catalog for 20 bucks. They will tell you oil levels, chain slack, how to adjust shocks rebound compression, cleaning tips, carb settings-whatever, they save a lot of time and money. Do you ever ride St.joes In Park Hills in Farmington Mo.? great trails. You can youtube some riders videos from there.
