right, so maybe im just not used to a 2 stroke this size, but i don't know if i even have a throttle stop.  seriously, its so sensitive i hardly need to twist the throttle.  since its been a few years, i figured it would be nice to have a little room, i just dont know if i want to pony up the cash for a whole new throttle. can i just adjust it?

So you dont want the throttle to be sensitive?

There are some aftermarket kits for that, but what type experience do you have (what bike are you coming from)and what type riding are you doing?

Based on that you may get some other opinions or options from other members.

Motion Pro (among others ) makes variable rate throttle kits, but I haven't found one listed for a 1998 KX-250.  You might want to give them a call.  They may have one that will work.

pretty sad experience really, few years ago i rode with some friends, and of course i ride four wheelers(usually for hunting), on the bright side i drive a stick, so i at least know how to work a clutch. there is a good chance i'm just not used to so much kick, or that since my trucks a 4 banger, i'm not used to rev'n so high. also, i'll ride about anywhere, fields, woods, tracks if i can find them

That is called throttle response.  On your bike I would call it excellent throttle response.  I would try putting a couple more hours in the saddle before investing in an assembly that would take away what could be a positive.

Dirt bikes (2 strokes especially) are known for having great throttle response. It is a desired trait that gives you more control over how well the bike reacts to your input.  A car or a utility quad will feel like it reacts very slowly to your input after you get accustomed to the way your bike reacts.

Look at this video and see how fast my bike spools up when I twist the throttle.  I was running her rich at the time (I was breaking in a new top end) and this was still a little slower response than what I normally get from my bike.

Drop a few teeth in the rear sprocket always. If your running a 50-51 run a 47-48 it will tame down the sensativity a bit

It could be as simple as adding some slack in the throttle cable. I don't remember that bike specifically, but I think there is adjustment for cable slack right at the throttle. Simply loosen the jam nut and thread the cable holder in a bit to add some slack. Other possibilities are a roughened or broken throttle tube. On a bike that old I would change the cable and the throttle tube. If the metal of the bar under the throttle is rough, change out the handlebar as well. If the cable is worn inside, it could be hanging up and then jerking open. Also, the G2 throttle tube is a great system. It simply opens the throttle a little slower initially. It won't case a bog or hesitation. I love them on four-strokes with a hard hit.
