2001 cr250,
there are a lot of good bikes in those years.  find a few on craigslist and post the links here so the guys can give you an opinion.  You should be able to find a deal.

Honda up to 01, Yamaha 02 or later.  But that is just my opinion.

I love the cr's of course, but I think you will have no problems these days finding great deals.Buyers market 4 sure. look more at the condition and care of the bike more than just years. Ask a ton of questions to see if the dude knows/knew what he's doing maintenance wise. But don't be fooled into thinking a later model year is going to be in automatically better shape. An adult owned and cared for 2000 with lite hours is way better than a roached '07 with slick but useless graphics. I bet you will have plenty of sweet bikes to choose from though. good luck to ya!

KTM made some really nice bikes in those years.  The 300 or 200 are super nice all-around bikes, and the SX models were designed for motocross tracks.

Yeah, never feel bad about walking away. There is nothing worse than inheriting a bike with big $ problems. Some guys are real good at making them look brand new in order to sell. I tell ya though, if you are looking to do some play riding on a variety of terrain, I found my cr250 very versatile for trails as well as mx. I basically play ride myself instead of race these days.

I have always rode Hondas (Cr's). I purchased a like new 05 RM 250 this past spring. I could not be happier with my decision. The bike handles great and runs strong, plenty of low end to lug through tight stuff and ready to go in the open. I think all the bikes are equivalent, you just need try and find a clean bike that was taken care of.

if your friends don't ride you need new friends...

I agree, taken care of is definitely the key. I find it hard to believe a well taken care of bike from any of the big 4 even from the 90's wouldn't be enough to satisfy a regular dude wanting to play ride on the weekends. You don't need to have the newest bike with every mod the magazines tell you about in order to have fun. I think katooms are awesome, but it may be tough to find a huge selection of them used like japanese bikes.

ASking the right questions will help while trying to buy a used bike. I think there are some threads in here for the correct questions to ask.
