hey so basicly whats happening is im buying my friends 1980 yz 80 (my first ever dirt bike) that he bought off craigslist.there is no clutch cable or lever but it shifts. when i buy it i want to have a clutch so would i need a whole clutch setup or just a cable and lever. also when you shift into first if you let go of the clutch with no gas will it idle or shut off?

Well if only the clutch cable and lever need to be replaced, and the rest of the clutch is in good condition, then yes you onle need the cable and lever.

And if you dont give it gas, and let go of the clutch, it WILL shut off. You can do that with some cars by just letting go of the clutch slowly, but there's a big difference between a bike and a car.

And lastly welcome to the board!

No i don't think bicycle cables would be strong enough, rather get the right stuff. and yeah you can shift with out a clutch but it's not recommended to. you can easily damage your transmision if not done exactly right.
