hi there. i have just bought a second hand 09 kxf250 and i am having toruble starting it. i havent had problems with starting a 250 or 150 ever before so this has really stumped me. i have cheked and re shimmed valve clearances so they are all good. i have just put a new spark plug in and the old one was thik blak. now it seems as if it has no compression then it hits a point were it is virtually solid, then as soon as you get past this point it repeats. i use choke and blip the throlle 3 times quickly before kicking and it seems to take around 40-50 kicks to start, however once started it is sweet as a nut! i have found that if i turn off the fuel and hold the throttle wide open it ussually starts within 4 or 5 kicks so if anybody has some advice it really would be appreciated! thanks Foggy !

IMO you need to work on your starting technique. Are you used to starting a 2 stroke?

If you kick it that many times, you obviously are bike crazy....like I am. ;-)
Check out the reed valves. That's what I'd do. Spray starting fluid one time through the air intake side of the carb, not the reed valve side. Duh. Kick it two or three times, it should take off, and most likely have a real high idle right away and then gradually drop. I just read the bottom part of your post and for God's sake, take the top off the carb, throttle plate, and adjust the jet. Cuz it sounds like a lot of money, tinkering, TIME, and b.crap. I KNOW! I HAVE A DIRT BIKE

Welcome foggy! KXF?? 4 stroke right?? U checked & shimmed ur valves first?? Why did u reshimm the valves?? What was the valve lash b4 u shimmed it?? what is the valve lash measurement now?? After I get this info I can try 2 help u.
Oh, and i know Ilyz250 is trying 2 help. but never (never) use either in a 2 stroke.
it is very volitale and can ignite in the lower end and push out ur crank seals. But it doesn't sound like u have a 2 stroke here so thats just an FYI

cheerz for all the help guys. im used to starting my 150 which starts first kick every time hot or cold lol . we cheked the shims because we bought it second hand and it as aregular procedure whenever we buy a fourstroke before we ride it, but they were nearly double what the tolerance is, so we shimmed it to the correct sizes which i think if i am correct is 4-6 thow (dont know how to spell it lol ) on the intake and 7-9 thow on the exhaust port.(i did do them to the correct stated sizes in the manual i just dont have it handy lol ) they were shimmed to the correct sizes and this job was done by my step dad , a qualified mechanic. after we shimmed it my self and my friend went out on both our 250's and mine started lovely hot or cold (ussually 1 or 2 kicks), however when i was riding i felt it starting to splutter on low revs which it didnt do before. i came out of an off cambered turn and opened it up pretty sharply as i had been doing all day and it spluttered, then took off and as a result me on my ass and myself and the bike both pointing in the opposite driection (oops), after this i couldnt get the bike to start and even tried to bump it several times. it refused to start and then when i got home(itwas stone cold) it started after 5 or 6 kicks, after this is when it started to be a pain to start, however this starting problem has puzzled us both (myself and stepdad). after i posted this last week i spoke to a friend who also has an 09 kxf and he said dont blip the throttle, so i went out and tried it and it started 2nd kick, i let it cool and tried it an hour later and it started first kick, so i though ideal problem solved, i never ussually have a problem starting any bike as i have very powerful legs (not boasting i just cycle everywhere lol ) and i have started 450s etc, however due to racing being cancelled last sunday when i unloaded the bike my step dad said now try and start it, so i turned fuel to on and choke on, no blips of the throttle and kicked as hard as i could, nothing until about 40 or 50 kicks later. and when there is 40 riders on the gat they aren't gunna wait 5 minutes for one dude to start his bike lol, so any help is deeply appreciated. cheerz Foggy (i know this post is a bit muddled up but my internet died when i tried to post it and i had to re-write it all again! lol )

Try cleaning your carb and see what jets, needle and the needle setting is, recheck the valve clearance, check for air and exhaust leaks and never touch the throttle when starting, not even after it starts, let it warm up first. Just a few things to check.

hi pojp58, i cleaned my carb out yesterday and the pilot jet was blocked, i cheked the spark etc while the tank was off , i put it back together and it started 3rd kick (no blips of the throttle ), i then tried to start it again later and it went back to normal (hard to start) it is rather annoying lol, we are taking it apart again to check other bits that were recommended to check but it is only 3 months old so shouldnt have any problems lol cheerz Foggy

Hi fog, it may be that you didn't get the junk cleaned out of your fuel line entirely, and the pilot jet or other areas may have become contaminated after your initial cleaning. This happened to me, and I round out I had some stuff in my tank, and kept getting it reintroduced into the carb. I bought and installed an in-line fuel filter and cleaned my tank out the best I could. No clogged pilot jets since I installed the line filter.
