Hey everyone just joined the forum looking for direction. I have an '81 Honda xl125s that seems to slip when in second gear, especially when you give it a little gas. No other gear does this which makes me think it's not the clutch, but not totally sure. When this is occurring I can hear things (not good sounding things) in the tranny. I've got the motor and tranny out and on a bench thinking about cracking it open. Thought I'd ask you folks before opening up that can. Thanks for any help.

Hey...welcome to the boards!
Honestly, I have no idea how to help you...I'm kind of a mechanical doofus. haha...but I know other people here certainly can; just wait for them to sign on sit tight

Sounds like the gear is shot, the teeth are not catching. I would open it up, take a look at the case.

Don't have the manual, so i was wondering??? do I just loosen the headbolts to get the head and cylinder apart from the crankcase? I know i should get the manual, but i just don't want to spend anymore money on an old bike. Also, when I open the case, is everything gonna hold together, or might I have parts flying everywhere. Thanks again

klosch, i had exactly the same problem a few months ago! it turned out the second gear wasnt held in place or something,so sometimes it catches in gear, but then suddenly slips as it moves away, a shop did mine so i cant tell you exactly.
It turned out to be an expensive repair because i rode like that, i was stupid! But if you didnt ride like this with it, it shouldnt be too much.
