I agree.

There are plenty of stores round my area that sell gently used kids stuff like clothing and sporting goods.  The one problem that might pop up is defining 'good condition'.  When I was looking for a used bike I realized how ambiguous that term really is.

That is a good idea. I just got a pair of Alpinestar tech6s for my 10yr old off ebay for $40.
The best advice I can give parents on a budget, is to buy boots 2 or 3 sizes too big, so hopefully they get more than a year out of them.
Fortunately I have a 2yr old daughter than can use her brothers old boots when she is older.

im saying that we as the dirt rider community, give and take amongst ourselves, just pay for the shipping that it would cost one way.the only thing i wouldnt trust is a helmet, but scrathed and banged equiptment is still good its just used,i know that i get about 4 years out of a pair of boots,my chest protector is at least7yrs old, mabye a moderator or administrator could get the ball rollin on this.
