Idk where you live but it may be different. But i live in massachusetts and work at stop n shop, they hire at 15. I looked around and they are the only place around that hire at fifteen. Your best bet is to search around, Good luck.

14 is tough, but a quick and easy way to work is to hang with the day laborer group in your area, and hop in the first truck that pulls up.

Your best choice would be to spend the time to get your grades up. That will help you get into college which will help you get a good job in the long run.JMO

chad, calling will be a waste of your time.  the best way is through a family freind or go to stores and see if they will let a 14 yr old fill out an app.

I would first try simple jobs like mowing lawns shoveling snow etc.  It's hard to find a "real" job when you are younger than 18.  Put some advertisements around the neighborhood go from there.  Good luck!

Actually, in retrospect, that may have been partially bad advice, lol. Don't just jump into any truck, lol.

If you live in an area where houses have landscape duties, go around and knock on doors, offering landscape work. Mowing, pulling weeds, that sort of thing. Poeple have a hard time saying no to a 14 year old looking to make a few dollars, use it to your advantage.

In this economy, companies are going to have a hard time hiring a 14 year old, while their are much more qualified people hunting for these jobs.

I'm pretty sure you have to be at least 15 to get a worker's permit in CA...I don't think you could even get one at 14 if you wanted to.

The problem you are going to have is two fold:  one, most companies don't hire anyone under 18 anymore because minors are a liability and they are restricted in their hours, and two, there is an abundance of over qualified unemployed people right now.

Perfect example is my summer camp that I work at every year:  this past summer we had 700+ applicants for 20 positions.  Of those 700 almost half were college graduates...that's INSANE.  Normally most applicants are right out of high school.

I heard that. We had 600 plus Resumes at the company I work part time for, for 2 positions, and they were waaaay over qualified for the positions.

I'm an example of that too...

I've got my BA and my teaching credential....and I'm selling parts.

college is overrated IMO.  But the groupthink is to go to college so you get a better paying job.  Whatever...  At 14 I ran an ad in the local paper for yard work, clean up, etc.  I started getting work and when I was 15 I started hiring friends to help me with the work load.  I've been sef-employed ever since, in addition to working at a ski resort every winter for 15 years starting at age 16.  If you have a good work ethic you can find work IMO.  I know times are tough right now, but don't let that deter you...
