You need to find the serial # which is stamped on the frame some where. Then call the dealer and they will be able to tell you the year. Before you hang up order a manual for the bike. And good luck with your project.

Show some pics if you can. And Welcome to the board.

To find the year it was made you need to find the 17 digit # on steering head of frame. find the 10th digit  B=1981 C=1982 D=1983 E=1984 F=1985 G=1986 H=1987 J=1988 K=1989 L=1990 M=1991 N=1992 P=1993 R=1994 S=1995 T=1996 V=1997 W=1998 X=1999 Y=2000 1=2001 2=2002 3=2003 4=2004 5=2005 6=2006 7=2007 8=2008 9=2009

you mean a newer or different engine in the yz chassis? umm, it can be done, dc here put a 490 two stroke engine in a yz125 two stroke frame. it required cutting, and welding and new engine mounts created etc. there is no way to be sure until you try it, i have no idea, nor will anyone here i don't think.

ive got a 1988 rm80, and im looking for another motor...the bike is a 1988 and i find motors for it but not the same year of the bike i have. if anyone has any idea if another motor will work thats just another year ,without a bunch of modifications please get back to me. i want to put another 80cc back in the bike..the bike itself is in pretty good shape and would like it to be as near as original as possible but im having a bummer of a time finding a 1988 80cc motor to put back in it, i found 1992s or as early as a 1985. i maybe gun shy but i dont want to make a purchase and find out ....that it or they wont work...help !!!!!! please

have you considered calling your local dealership and explaining to them what kind and year of bike you have because they can go through the computers and see any other year of the same kind of bikes motor that can fit your specific year.

Is this the same formula that you would use for a RM250. Also what kind of oil should I use for the clutch and gears? And should it be filled to the top of the fill plug? Thanks

the formula as far as finding out what year the bike is my 10th digit is  a K, so it looks like it is an 89. just not sure if its the same formula for this bike or not. thanks

Hello!
I have the same problem, i think my rm 125 is a -02, but not sure. And have been testing a vin-decoder, but my vin-number dont match with any year.

JS1RF16A000500472 is my number and the 10th digit is a "0".. soo wich year is that? the bikes apperiance is similar to the other -02 models though.. but it was a trade and therefor im not totally sure if the dude was rigth, he claimed it was a -02, but the 10th digit confuses me..
Somebody know something?..
or i guess i  will call the dealer tomorrow

Most times I think its the 10th digit from the right. That would make it a "A" but that dont match anything either. You sure the number is right.
